What first interested you in studying Law?
Throughout high school, I never considered studying law. I saw it as a subject that smart, and often boring, people pursued to set themselves up for a bit of money in the future. I couldn’t have been more wrong. I quickly discovered that law can be whatever you want it to be. It is incredibly wide-ranging and touches virtually every corner of society, whether that is space, sport, or property. I have found that to be true not only throughout my degree, but also during my first year at Sharp Tudhope.
How would you describe the transition from university to working at Sharp Tudhope Lawyers?
The transition from university to working at Sharp Tudhope Lawyers is an exciting challenge. From your very first week, you get to engage with real clients and real problems. It’s a unique opportunity, and for me it was paired with a healthy dose of nerves and anticipation. Fortunately, everyone at Sharp Tudhope is very supportive, and you’re paired with a patient ‘lawyer buddy’ who, in my case, was more than happy to repeat the same thing five times a day. You also take part in a comprehensive graduate induction over your first few months, which lets you learn about not only your own team but the wider firm.
What do you enjoy most about working at Sharp Tudhope Lawyers?
One thing I really enjoy is the access to knowledge from those with more experience. Whether it’s a partner or a solicitor, everyone is eager to help, quick to check in, and willing to answer every silly question. This creates not only an enjoyable working environment but a safe space to learn.
What are some of the essential skills a graduate should have?
Various skills which are developed at university, such as attention to detail, the research basics and written and oral communication, are all important. However, in many ways, your first legal job is a restart, so the most important skill to have is the willingness and ability to learn.
What do you enjoy most about living in Tauranga?
The sun is the best bit for me. I also love the size of the place: it’s big enough to have everything you need, without the ridiculous traffic and high costs of Auckland and the other big cities.
Describe a typical day as a graduate:
As a graduate, one of my main tasks is supporting senior colleagues throughout the different parts of the conveyancing process. This could be anything from drafting an initial agreement to setting up a payment on settlement day. Taking instructions and drafting Wills is another major part of a graduate’s role in the property team.
