After 39 years with Sharp Tudhope Lawyers, Bill Chapman has retired, bringing to a close a legal career spanning almost 50 years and nearly four decades of service to the firm, its clients, and the Bay of Plenty community.

Admitted in 1977, Bill began his legal career in Whakatāne before joining Sharp Tudhope in 1987. The firm looked very different then, and over the years Bill played an important role in helping shape it into what it is today. Along the way, he built trusted relationships with clients, supported generations of colleagues, and made a lasting contribution to the wider community.

Bill became a Partner in 1990 and remained in that role for 32 years before transitioning to a consultancy position in 2022. Throughout his career, he became known not only for his legal expertise, but also for his practical advice, steady guidance, and calm demeanour.

Beyond the firm, Bill served on the Foundation Board of Tauranga Riding for the Disabled for many years, reflecting his longstanding commitment to our region.

“Bill has been a hugely valued member of our firm for nearly four decades. His contribution extends far beyond his legal work, through his mentorship, leadership and the relationships he has built within the firm and across the community.”
– Matthew Billett, Chair of Partners

We recently had the privilege of celebrating Bill’s career alongside staff, clients, family and friends, reflecting on the many milestones, achievements and memories from his time with us.

While retirement marks the end of Bill’s professional journey with Sharp Tudhope, the impact he has had on our people, our clients and our culture will be felt for many years to come.

Thank you, Bill, for your dedication, friendship and contribution over the past 39 years. We wish you every happiness in your retirement.
