What first interested you in studying Law?
Like many people, I was initially drawn to law by the idea of working in an industry where I could help people. I’ve also always had a strong appetite for learning, and there aren’t many careers better suited to that than law. It’s constantly evolving and underpins so much of how society functions – I’ve always liked the idea of a career grounded in continuous learning.
How would you describe the transition from university to working at Sharp Tudhope Lawyers?
I didn’t expect the transition to be easy, but it was initially confronting just how different practising law is compared to studying it. That said, I genuinely couldn’t imagine a better place to start my career. Everyone at Sharp Tudhope has been incredibly supportive and approachable. I’ve never felt pressure to know more than I do, and I’ve always felt comfortable asking questions.
What do you enjoy most about working at Sharp Tudhope Lawyers?
The people, without a doubt. Spending such a large portion of your life at work is made easier when you genuinely enjoy being there. I also love the variety in my workload – even in my first year, I’ve been exposed to a wide range of matters. There’s an enormous wealth of knowledge here, and I feel very fortunate to be learning in an environment where support and guidance are readily available.
What are some of the essential skills a graduate should have?
Attention to detail is crucial. As a graduate, you are still learning –take notes, absorb everything you can, and don’t be afraid to give things a go even if you’re not confident. Saying yes and getting stuck in is the best way to learn, not just how to be a good lawyer, but what areas of law you enjoy. Getting involved in the firm culture is also important, there are so many opportunities both within the firm and the wider community.
What do you enjoy most about living in Tauranga?
I moved here from Morrinsville three years ago and now couldn’t imagine living without the beach on my doorstep. I love the active lifestyle and the work-life balance that people here really embrace. It definitely doesn’t hurt that Tauranga also has great food, great coffee, and plenty to do outside of work.
Describe a typical day as a graduate at ST
No two days are the same, which is part of what makes it enjoyable. You never quite know what will land on your desk. Graduates are involved in a wide range of tasks, including research, drafting letters and court documents, and assisting across different matters. We’re involved in the entire process from day one, and I’ve learned more practical skills in a year here than I did in four years of university.
What advice would you give to someone who is interested in joining ST as a grad?
Be yourself. Strong grades, a solid CV and cover letter matter, but it’s also important to show some personality. And once you’re here, get involved. Sharp Tudhope has so much to offer, and making the most of the firm culture and opportunities available really does make a difference.
