What first interested you in studying Law?
In high school, it was always my dream to become an engineer. After studying first year engineering at university, I decided it wasn’t for me. I then decided to pursue a career in law as I viewed it as a way in which I could solve problems and help people, two things I’ve always enjoyed doing.
How would you describe the transition from university to working at Sharp Tudhope Lawyers?
I learnt fairly quickly as a graduate that law school only teaches you a small portion of the legal skills and knowledge you need for practice. I was overwhelmed on my first day by the vast amount of new information I felt as though I was expected to know. I soon realised that it’s not the end of the world if you don’t understand or know something straight away. Every day is an opportunity to learn something new and senior colleagues are always there to provide you with help and guidance.
What do you enjoy most about working at Sharp Tudhope Lawyers?
One of the things I enjoy most about working at Sharp Tudhope is the diverse range of work I’m involved in as it offers me a unique opportunity to develop my legal knowledge, particularly in niche areas of law that I might not have otherwise been exposed to. Another thing is the supportive team environment. Coming from a sporting background, I’ve felt great comfort in being apart of a culture where it feels as though everyone is dedicated to helping one another succeed.
What are some of the essential skills a graduate should have?
Attention for detail, strong research abilities, effective time management, good interpersonal skills and critical thinking.
What do you enjoy most about living in Tauranga?
The best part about living back in Tauranga is living close to friends and family.
Describe a typical day as a graduate:
No two days look the same in the commercial team. As a graduate, you will have the opportunity to work alongside different team members and be involved in a range of different work which can include (but is by no means limited to) capital raising, business sale and purchase and corporate governance matters. Primarily, you will assist with reviewing and drafting legal documents, conducting legal research and supporting other team members through different aspects of a particular matter.
What advice would you give to someone who is interested in joining Sharp Tudhope as a grad?
My dad has always told me “You get out what you put in”. I believe that statement rings true for a legal career as well. We all know how daunting it can be to be the new kid on the block but remember no one expects you to know everything from day one. Take every opportunity to learn (whether from your senior colleagues or on your own account), absorb as much knowledge as you can and be confident. Don’t hesitate to ask questions if you need to.
